Description
A superb tall and wide Victorian flamed mahogany chest of drawers of exceptional quality, dating from circa 1860 and originating from Scotland.
This handsome piece features an attractive arrangement of three short drawers over three full-width long drawers, all fitted with the original turned wooden knobs and brass escutcheons. The drawers run smoothly and offer generous storage throughout.
The chest is crowned with a gently oversailing top and framed by a pair of beautifully turned and carved decorative columns, terminating beneath finely detailed circular capitals. A particularly charming feature is the concealed central “secret” drawer positioned beneath the top, demonstrating the craftsmanship and ingenuity of 19th-century cabinetmakers.
The base is finished with a moulded skirt and elegant bulbous turned front feet, providing both visual balance and presence. The richly figured flamed mahogany displays outstanding colour, depth and grain throughout, with a warm patina developed over more than 160 years.
Condition
The chest has undergone careful restoration and is presented in very good condition. Historic woodworm was discovered and has been professionally treated as a precaution. The piece has been refinished to enhance the beautiful flamed mahogany, and a number of minor veneer repairs have been sympathetically carried out. These restorations have been completed to a high standard, preserving both the integrity and character of this fine antique.
